How To Take Your Makeup Boldly Into Fall

By Stephanie Hepburn, The Times-Picayune on August 30, 2013 at 1:02 AM

Fall may be associated with the earthtone colors of the harvest and the turning of leaves, but fall makeup is quite the opposite: Bold is in. We’re talking teal and indigo eyes, shimmering orange cheeks and black lips. Of course, because each color is a statement, you won’t want to wear them all at once.

Mouthing off
Gone are the days when an almost black lip was associated with alternative fashion style, but pulling off the look still intimidates many. The solution, says makeup artist Robert Hudson, is to go with a sheer black like the Janiberry Lipstick by Wallett Cosmetics. Use a lip brush to apply, and skip the liner. The lipstick is designed to hydrate and provide long-term color. “For more depth, you can outline and fill in the lip with the Wallett lip pencil in Delice ($15),” Hudson says. “It has the same base color as the lipstick and will blend easily. This type of lip is a statement on its own, so don’t overpower it with too dark of an eye or too much blush.” Janiberry Lipstick, Wallett Cosmetics $19 by appointment at Robert Hudson Makeup Studio, 8206 Maple St., 504.473.8167

Blue-green with envy
Teal shadow is a must-have. Our favorite is the Single Eye Shadow in Tropic by Nars, which features a matte teal with silver particles. The shadow is designed to stay on, and will look as bold at the end of the night as it does at the beginning. It is crease-resistant and smudges well (ideal for blending into other shadows). For less intensity, lightly brush on the eyelid. For a more dramatic look, pat on the shadow with a brush, blending it up to the bottom of the brow bone. It pairs well with a neutral lip. Blushing, but not shy
A bit of blush helps to brighten your skin once the summer sun has faded. Blushes with hints of orange offer a fresh pop of color that can go with any makeup look, from daytime neutral to nighttime bold. Who’s Your Poppy is a highly pigmented orange/peachy-pink shade with a golden shimmer that goes with any skin tone. This moisturizing blush gives sheer and luminous color that makes the skin look rejuvenated, even after a long day at the office. Layer it for more intensity. A magic marker

The retro cat-eye look is still in full force, but added to the mix for fall is the cat-eye liner in a bold hue such as indigo or teal. Makeup artist Brandy Gomez-Duplessis loves the Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Indigo by Stila Cosmetics. The striking rich-blue hue is easy to apply using its felt tip. “The felt tip helps to give the precise cat-eye,” Gomez-Duplessis says. “The great thing about this item is that it goes on smoothly, no skipping or pulling.” During the day, use it with a bare or neutral eyelid. At night, pair it with an equally bold glittery shadow. Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Indigo, Stila Cosmetics $20 at Earthsavers
